Fauci Takes the Fifth, Attorney Removed From Room
In his opening statement, Fauci announced he would not answer the panel’s questions, citing legal advice from his lawyers. He said the move pained him given his respect for Congress and his decades of cooperating with lawmakers, but that Paul’s recent release of his private diary had left him no real choice.

Paul says the entries show a gap between what Fauci wrote privately and what he told the American public. The origin of COVID-19 remains an unsettled question. U.S. intelligence agencies themselves are split, with some leaning toward an accidental lab leak in Wuhan and others favoring a natural jump from animals to humans. Fauci has said he keeps an open mind but personally leans toward the animal-to-human theory, a position Paul has repeatedly challenged.
